In Europe gasoline costs about $6 a gallon—$4 of that is tax. More than 60% of autos are compacts, 89% have four cylinders or less and 80% have stick shifts.
One reason Minnesota has so many flex-fuel autos is because the state has built more ethanol fuel stations than any other. Automakers offer almost 70 models of alternative fuel autos in the U.S. and over 12 million are on American roads. That’s a start. But we need policies that encourage more consumers to choose fuel-efficient autos.
We don’t have all the answers to questions about reasonable fuel economy standards. No one does. Together, we can find the answers America deserves.
